Advent Week 2 LOVE

2 Samuel 7:26 (NLT)
And may your name be honored forever so that everyone will say, ‘The LORD of
Heaven’s Armies is God over Israel!’ And may the house of your servant David
continue before you forever.
Matthew 1:1, 6, 16 (NLT)
This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah,
a descendant of David and of Abraham:
6 Jesse was the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon
(whose mother was Bathsheba, the widow of Uriah).
16 Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary.
Mary gave birth to Jesus, who is called the Messiah.
Luke 1:26-33 (NLT)
In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to
Nazareth, a village in Galilee, 27 to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be
married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. 28 Gabriel
appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!”
29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. 30
“Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! 31
You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will
be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give
him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 And he will reign over Israel forever; his
Kingdom will never end!”
Luke 2:3-7 (NLT)
All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. 4 And
because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in
Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in
Galilee. 5 He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was now
expecting a child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be
born. 7 She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him snugly in strips of
cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no lodging available for them.
1. Christmas is all about God’s love of giving Jesus to us.
Ephesians 2:4-5 (NLT)
But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, 5 that even though we
were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the
dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)

1 John 4:10 (NLT)
This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son
as a sacrifice to take away our sins.
2. Jesus gave a command, not a suggestion, to love each other.
John 13:34 (NLT)
So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have
loved you, you should love each other.
1 Peter 1:22 (NLT)
You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must
show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply
with all your heart.
1 John 3:16-18 (NLT)
We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also
ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If someone has enough
money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no
compassion—how can God’s love be in that person? 18 Dear children, let’s not
merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.
3. I’m afraid I will somehow lose God’s love….what do I do?
John 10:28-29 (NLT)
I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away
from me, 29 for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than
anyone else. No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand.
Romans 8:35-39 (NLT)
Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer
loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute,
or in danger, or threatened with death? 36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake
we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) 37 No, despite all
these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.
Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor
our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from
God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing
in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is
revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

covenant The Lord made with Abraham? Who is the father of Joseph? Who
is the father of Jesus?
3. What does Messiah mean? Is Christ, Jesus’ last name or a title? Read Luke
1:26-33. Again, what is promised in verses 32-33?
4. Read Luke 2:3-7. How does The Lord use the Roman government to fulfill
His messianic prophecies in Micah 5:2? How far is it from Nazareth to
Bethlehem? What’s a manger?

verses about earning God’s love and earning salvation?
6. If you didn’t obey direct orders from a boss, how long would you be
employed?
7. The English word “Lord” means boss, CEO, commander or chief. Read John

Imagine it’s employee review time and the BOSS JESUS calls you into His
office to go over how well you follow His orders to be loving. What’s He say
to you?
